Bharli Mirchi

Bharli Mirchi (Stuffed Chili)
(Fat green chilies stuffed with besan mixture)

Level of Difficulty: Easy

Preparation time (excluding prior preparation): 30 min

Serving: 4-5 portions


1/8 kg fat green chillies
1 cup gram flour (besan)
1/2 cup jowar flour (sorghum)
1 tsp red chili powder
1/4 tsp sugar
1 lemon
3 tsp freshly cut coriander
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp sesame seeds
1/4 tsp asaphoetida
Vegetable oil


  1. Slit the chili along the length. Apply some salt using a finger inside the chili
  2. Mix besan and jowar flour in a bowl along with red chili powder, 1/2 tsp salt and sugar. Squeeze lemon and add fresh coriander
  3. Heat 2 tsp oil in a small pan. Add mustard seeds. Once they start crackling, add sesame seeds and asaphoetida. Then stop heating
  4. Add heated oil to the flour mixture and mix well. If too dry, add a few drops of water.
  5. Stuff the slit chillies with the mixture
  6. Roast the stuffed chillies on a pan with some oil until dark. Keep flipping the chillies to roast them uniformly
